Public Response On The Windows Xp Unofficial Service Pack 4 Overview Demo

I am Charalampos Kazakos, the author of Windows XP Unofficial SP4. First of all, I would like to thank you Michael for creating this video, explaining how to install the update rollup. I am not a professional developer. I am a physician from Athens, Greece, interested in Ophthalmology LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charalampos-kazakos-a337a9b8 and this is my academic page: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7489-9472. You can verify my identity as the SP4 author from my e-mail ([email protected]); I am the corresponding author of a Schizophrenia Bulletin study we have authored with a friend of mine from Medical School ( https://doi.org/10.1093/schbul/sbz106 ) and I have used it over there. This is the archived version of the SP4 RyanVM.net thread showing my mail address at the first post: https://web.archive.org/web/20191105073426/https://ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10321 So, I would like to share with all of you guys more details on how I created the Unofficial SP4 in 2013-2014. During September 2013, there were strikes of the administrative staff at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), where I studied Medicine, due to austerity measures. So I had plenty of free time. I had 2 old Windows XP computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop) that could not be upgraded to the latest version of Windows. Due to the large number of post-SP3 updates it was a pain to reinstall Windows every time it was necessary. I had tried the Onepiece's post-SP3 update pack, but I was not satisfied with the way it handled .NET Frameworks. It also suffered from Windows File Protection errors occasionally. So, I decided to create a full update rollup for Windows XP, that would be truly generic - in the same way an official service pack is deployed. The first month of development was about satisfying digital signature requirements. As you can see in the RyanVM thread, this had been attempted in the past unsuccessfully, in other unofficial SP projects. Without getting too technical, I discovered that Windows XP setup libraries did not verify important Windows Setup INF files against Microsoft Root Certificate. I was able to generate my own root CA and intermediate certificates and seamlessly modify important INF files like layout.inf and syssetup.inf. After this major breakthrough, I started integrating core system components like IE8, WMP11, etc. I also added Tablet PC 2005, Media Center 2005 UR2 components, with all updates. Because I did everything manually at the time, I had to perform several tests and check various deployment scenarios - again I will not get too technical. I remember working 8 hours everyday on the project for 3 months, with some occasional breaks to chat and play games with friends at Facebook. When the strike was over, I had to study Medicine and finish the SP4 project in time - XP end-of-life was close. Development took longer than I wanted, however. I was thrilled when Stefan Kanthak, a world-class security researcher contacted me via e-mail and offered me to add his 'security enhancements', which had not been patched by Microsoft. Finally, SP4 was completed in October 2014 and was released to the RyanVM.net members and the Windows XP community. I re-released SP4 in January 2016 (v3.1a) to include the latest updates and fix some issues. A March 2016 minor update (3.1b, current) fixed some Windows Update issues. For everyone using the Windows XP SP4 EXE on a 'live' system (not clean CD-ROM install), I want to stress that after first reboot, users should wait for several minutes, so that .NET Framework is configured at the background (files and registry are installed before reboot, but some post-reboot tasks need to be executed). Please backup your system with a system imaging tool, so that you can quickly revert to previous state if something goes wrong. Enjoy Windows XP SP4!

Something in SP4 kills compatibility with my wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse, so be warned before you install this on your retro gaming PCs if you are using those.
